The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) provides a commitment to improving the quality of emergency care, by educating and training physicians in emergency medicine to provide quality emergency care in the nation’s hospitals. ACEP represents more than 38,000 emergency physicians, residents and medical students in promoting the highest quality of emergency care and is a leading advocate for emergency physicians, their patients, and the public.
Challenge:
In order to reach a wider audience, and appeal to their on the go users, ACEP decided to enlist the help of LefeWare Solutions to build the “ACEP” mobile app along with with the backend APIs and cloud infrastructure for hosting them
LefeWare Solutions was given 3 months to provide a basic prototype for an ACEP mobile app with a handful of key features to put in front of stakeholders with no intentions of ever going live. Our team decided to use React Native to build the app due to its cross platform abilities and extensive library selection. We were able to deliver the app ahead of schedule and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The prototype was deemed to have immediate value to ACEP customers and the decision was made to publish the app to the Apple App Store and Google Play store and begin marketing to physicians across the US.
Over the next couple of months our team continued to add new features to the mobile app that provided extensive values to the users of the app. This required building and securing multiple backend APIs for more advanced features like push notifications, live news feeds, continued education and beside point of care tools for emergency physicians in real clinical use cases.
We chose to host ACEP’s backend APIs using Azure App Service, a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering that provides a scalable and managed environment for deploying web applications. Additionally, to efficiently handle the high throughput actions as the app experiences growth in its customer base, we utilized several serverless Azure Functions. These serverless functions enabled ACEP to dynamically allocate resources based on demand, ensuring optimal performance and cost-effectiveness.
In terms of data storage, ACEP adopted a hybrid approach. They leveraged Azure Cosmos DB, a NoSQL database service, for their non-relational data storage needs. Azure Cosmos DB offers global scalability, high availability, and low latency, making it suitable for handling large amounts of unstructured or semi-structured data.
Additionally, the organization also utilized Azure SQL Server, a relational database management system (RDBMS), to store structured and relational data. This choice allows them to benefit from the robustness, data integrity, and querying capabilities provided by a traditional SQL database.
